Walter Bosse was a significant Austrian artist and designer known for his distinctive modernist style.Walter Bosse (November 13, 1904 – December 13, 1979) was a Viennese artist, designer, ceramist, potter, metalworker, and craftsman noted for his modernist bronze animal figurines and grotesques. He was born in Vienna to artists Luise and Julius Bosse.
He attended the Universität für Angewandte Kunst (University of Applied Arts) from 1918 to 1921, where he studied ceramics and ornament.
A prolific artist with a playful Modernist sensibility, he continually experimented to produce an eclectic body of work that included metalwork, pottery, and household objects. Credited with thousands of works and models for ceramic pieces, Walter Bosse was an intensely prolific designer.
The modernist Austrian sculptor and ceramist was best known for his distinctive “Black Golden” series of decorative objects and figurines, particularly his hedgehog ashtrays. This “Black Golden” series, like this candle holder featured pieces with dark patinated surfaces and brass or gold accents. Authentic and highly collectible piece.
