Charming vintage brass desk blotter (also called a rocking blotter or ink blotter) with aged green painted wooden handle. This substantial piece weighs 730g and measures 14cm in length, indicating quality construction from the era when fountain pens and liquid ink were standard office equipment. The solid brass roller shows beautiful patina with brushed finish and age-related darkening, while the cylindrical wooden handle retains its original green paint with authentic chippy, distressed finish revealing natural wood underneath.
The curved brass roller would have been rocked over freshly written ink to absorb excess moisture using blotting paper, preventing smudging and speeding drying time. The hefty weight provided the necessary pressure for effective blotting. The green painted handle is characteristic of mid-20th century office equipment, though the design itself dates back to earlier fountain pen eras.
This type of desk blotter was an essential tool in offices, schools, banks, and homes before the widespread adoption of ballpoint pens in the 1950s-60s. The brass construction was preferred as it wouldn’t corrode from contact with iron gall inks.
Perfect for vintage office decor, desk accessory collectors, stationery enthusiasts, or calligraphers and fountain pen users who still appreciate traditional writing tools.Good vintage condition with authentic patina. Brass roller shows surface scratches, tarnishing, and age-related wear consistent with use. Green painted wooden handle has significant paint loss and distressing (as pictured). Handle remains solid with no cracks or splits. Roller mechanism is functional.
