This is an exceptionally rare and unusual antique teddy bear made from hessian/burlap fabric, dating from the early 1900s. A truly unique piece of teddy bear history and folk art.
Construction & Materials:
• Made entirely from natural hessian/burlap sacking material
• Flat, frog-style body design with outstretched arms and legs
• Simple hand-stitched construction
• Round ears sewn onto head
• Brown embroidered nose
• Brass eyes
• Stuffed with likely kapok or similar period filling

Characteristics:
• Extremely primitive and folk art style
• Likely homemade or cottage industry production
• Very early 20th century design aesthetic
• Simple, charming expression
• Flat body meant for cuddling or as a comfort toy

Approximate Measurements:
• Height: approximately 40cm - 45 cms when laid flat
• Width (arms outstretched): approximately 35-40cms

Condition:
• Shows significant age and wear consistent with 100+ years
• Hessian fabric is fragile with visible fraying and wear
• Some discoloration and soiling throughout
• Nose shows wear to embroidery
• Seams show stress and age-related deterioration
• Eyes intact and original
• Overall structurally sound given age and material
• Missing any original clothing if there was any
• This level of wear is expected and actually adds to authenticity

Historical Significance:
Bears made from hessian/burlap are exceptionally rare as the material was typically considered too rough for toys. This suggests either wartime economy (WWI era when materials were scarce), a homemade creation, or early folk art toy-making. The flat “frog” design was popular in the 1910s-1920s.

Collector’s Note:
This is a museum-quality piece representing early toy-making history and the resourcefulness of early 20th century crafters. Hessian bears rarely survive due to the fragile nature of the material, making this an extraordinary find for serious teddy bear collectors or folk art enthusiasts.
