Sound: Turkish copper darbukas are prized for their superior resonance and warm, rich tones. They produce distinctive crisp “tek” sounds when struck on the edge and deep, resonant “dum” bass notes when struck in the center. Copper construction provides excellent acoustic properties. Essential for traditional Turkish, Arabic, and belly dance music.
Era: Likely late 20th century
Historical Note: Copper has been the traditional material for Turkish darbukas for centuries, valued for its acoustic properties and workability. Handmade copper darbukas are considered superior to modern aluminum versions.
