This is an elegant early 20th century cigarette case crafted from metal, likely dating from the 1920s-1940s. The case features a stunning hand-painted enamel plaque depicting a serene European landscape scene with a tranquil canal or stream lined with tall autumn trees in golden-yellow and green hues. The atmospheric pastoral scene shows reflective water, lush vegetation along the banks, and a misty background, rendered in the Romantic landscape tradition popular during this era.
The rectangular case has gently rounded corners and a hinged opening mechanism with a spring-loaded thumb clasp for secure closure. The polished chrome or nickel-silver exterior shows authentic period wear with surface scratches and patina consistent with nearly a century of age and use. The interior reveals gold-tone metal.
This type of decorative cigarette case was a fashionable gentleman’s or lady’s accessory during the Art Deco and inter-war period, when smoking was considered sophisticated and such cases served as both functional items and personal style statements. The enamel work demonstrates skilled artisan craftsmanship typical of European (possibly German, Austrian, or Czech) manufacture.
