Blue cloth boards with facsimile signature in white to cover, illustrated dust jacket featuring Whiteley’s painting “Jacaranda Tree (on Sydney Harbour),” which won the 1977 Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. 232 pages with extensive colour and black-and-white plates of Whiteley’s work, drawn from his diaries, interviews, and notebooks. Text by Sandra McGrath, a close family associate and respected Australian art critic. Good condition.

1992 was a significant year for Whiteley publishing — a separate paperback edition released that year by Angus & Robertson was recalled and pulped following a Supreme Court copyright action brought by the Whiteley estate. This copy is the Bay Books hardcover printing, a different edition from that contested paperback, but it’s worth mentioning the context since it adds interest for Whiteley collectors researching the publishing history.

Whiteley monographs are consistently sought after given his stature as one of Australia’s most significant modern artists (twice winner of the Archibald, Wynne, and Sulman prizes).
