Antique Victorian Biscuit Tin — “The Draughts Players” after Joseph Clark

A charming antique lithographed biscuit tin, the hinged lid decorated with a fine chromolithographic reproduction of “The Draughts Players,” a well-known Victorian genre painting by English artist Joseph Clark (1834–1926), first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1859. The scene depicts a grandfather playing draughts (checkers) with his young grandson at a cottage table, while a mother tends her baby by the fireplace, a small girl looks on, and the family dog sleeps by the hearth — a tender, homely composition typical of Clark’s much-loved domestic subjects. The title is printed on a small tab along the lid’s edge. The tin has a black japanned exterior with a brass-toned interior, consistent with decorative biscuit tins produced in the late Victorian/Edwardian era, when manufacturers such as Huntley & Palmers and others frequently reproduced popular paintings on their tinware.

Condition: general wear consistent with age — surface scuffs, some paint loss/chipping to the lid edges, and tarnishing to the brass toned interior. Please see photos for full condition.
