This is a vintage poster from the Winter Dance Party tour of 1959 - one of the most historically significant and tragic tours in rock and roll history. The poster advertises performances at The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa (Monday February 2nd 1959) and features performers including Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, Don McLean, and Frankie Sardo. This was the infamous tour that ended in tragedy on February 3, 1959, when Holly, Valens, and Richardson died in a plane crash after their Clear Lake performance- an event later immortalised as “The Day the Music Died” in Don McLean’s song “American Pie”. The poster includes the complete tour schedule showing dates across the Midwest.
